rotting plants

I have lost two philanopsis in the last week, they seem healthy - new leaves starting but they have rotted at the base of the stem - help what am I doing wrong

base of the stem ....you must be referring to the crown....when it is constantly wet and you let bacteria develop.... it will rot....this happens very fast and you wont even know what hit you....
it is best to dry the crown with folded papertowel after watering; also invest in oscillating electric fans to help dry the crown and avoid bugs, fungi and bacteria to develop

Yeah Bud is right. It sounds like your getting crown rot from letting water sit in the crown of the plant. When you water and get water in the crown or leaf axils you need to dry those areas out with a paper towel or something. If it sits there too long it rots.
