Default 5 YEARS SAME POT...

my boyfriend's mom has this in her bathroom, she said its been in the same pot for 5 years! it looks like all the roots that were in the pot are dead, or mostly dead but it has all these really healthy air roots. she's asked me to repot it for her, should i maybe mount it or put it in a hanging basket and let the roots hang since they're already used to growing completely in the air???

here it is

A nice teak 4-6" basket would be great.... Cut off the crown below the first good root... I would be inclined to use lightly packed sphagmun moss intel you have a good amount of root attached to the basket. Try not to mess with the good root to much.

I will assume this will go back into a bathroom? A hanging basket in a bathroom, teak or otherwise, may not be the best solution. Read the info on Phals on the sticky section of the beginner section for more ideas. Also type Phal Culture in the Search bar at the head of the OB for threads pertaining to Phals.

I recommend your plant go back into a pot, WITH the hanging ROOTS. Cut the stem to remove the old roots that may be rotten as was suggested by Keithrs and plant in fir bark and perlite or a mix that works for you in your area.

Why do you suggest a teak basket is not a good solution?

It looks like it's in a clear plastic pot, inside of a glass bowl. Clear plastic pots are my favorite way to pot phals.. You could probably repot it, in the same plastic pot with new medium. Make sure the plastic pot has drainage holes. Then you can set the plastic pot in something decorative like a little basket. Something that air can get through.
