Poor man's orchids
Default Poor man's orchids

Was out today, enjoying some orchids on the patio that everyone can enjoy. Epidendrum radicans hybrids. Cane stemmed plants, not exactly terrestrial but a light mix of bark and stuff seems to do it.

There actually is a plant called Poor Man's Orchid, but it's not an orchid. It's botanical name is Schizanthus.

Oh, poor man's or not, I still like epidendrums! The pink one is nice, but I got a soft spot for the bright colors in orchids and prefer the red/orange/yellow one.

I've got a couple myself and I've got no idea how the flowers look. I can't seem to get mine to flower. They're growing like crazy, got nice roots (aerial and in the bark mix) and are in so much light they got a faint purple tint, and I keep looking for spikes and they just grow leaf after leaf after leaf...

But maybe I'm lucky this upcoming summer. I see you live in the USA, and they flower now, during the summer, so I'll just cross my fingers for Jan/Feb 2013.

Most reed stemmed Epidendrums need absolutely full sun all day long. No shade. They won't bloom in much less light than that.
