Should I bring my chids in for the day? 93 degrees out
Default Should I bring my chids in for the day? 93 degrees out

I have about 30 orchids outside hanging from trees and stuff, none are in direct light except for my cyms and my den. Tomorrow it's supposed to get to 93 degrees and with humidity supposed to feel like 109. The weather is also calling for thunder showers. My question is; should I bring them in tonight or will a day in high heat really do that much damage? I just watered them tonight and it looks like they will get another watering tomorrow if it rains. I have phals, dens, cyms, oncids and catts outside. Almost all of them are far away from direct light. My den seems to love the light and is growing amazingly, my cyms are growing very well in direct light as well. The rest are in filtered light or shade. They have all been outside for over a month and all doing well. Am I going to encounter any problems from one hot humid day?

I'm leaving mine outside under a canopy. I have almost all the same types as you have. I am in ontario and it's been HOT. I think they should be ok, but maybe someone else will chime in. I hadn't thought about bringing them in until I read you post.

We've been having hot weather and the only plant that couldn't take the heat was aerangis citrata...my last one quickly failed in last year's 32'C/90'F+ heatwave. (Needless to say, aerangis ellissi is now my favorite aerangis.) Everyone else is thriving. I did give my phals more shade once it started to hit the high eighties (which it has been all summer). You will need to water more but the storm should take care of that. As always, just spend a little time every day checking plant health.

I have a few Catts, Oncids, Cyms outside and we have been in the low 30's celcius for over a week recently. Not a cloud in the sky. Mine were find and seemed to like it hanging from tree branches in partial shade. The Cyms get pretty direct light and I do that every year. In my greenhouse all the rest (which I have a number of all the type you mentioned) got in the high 90'sF and a lot of light and all survived because I was managing to keep the humidity reasonably high and good moving air. The only thing to watch is to not let water sit in crowns like the Phals. I don't put them out for that reason. It was pouring rain here yesterday and today and I brought my Zygopetalum in yesterday too. I don't have any roof to protect them outside, only trees!

I have mostly catts and phals and in NY it has been very hot! I move them to the shade, much like you have done and they are just fine. I have my Nodosa in the full sun and it's taking off! Tons of new growth! The phals are all growing fast and some Reactivating their spikes from winter and spring. They all seem to be enjoying it.
I think your plants will be fine the way you have them as long as they have moisture cuz this heat dries stuff out.

Oops, I don't grow cyms so I haven't tested those.

Yeah I lost a phal to crown rot once so I actually keep my phals in pots on an angle so any water from above doesn't get into the crown. The rest of my phals are mounted so they naturally hang down a bit with the crown pointing to the side so they never have water standing in them. I found this to be the best solution. I'm keeping my fine rooted plants and minis inside cause I don't wanna take any chances with them drying out and I don't really feel like watering my Tolumnia Jairuks like 10 times a day lol

Ha that same thing happened to me last summer! My entire phal collection! 13 plants I think. All to crown rot! Wet and humid summer no tilt. I too now am trying to grow mine on an angle as well. Just as a precaution I have them in a window on the porch to have complete control over the water that gets on them
