I'm assuming it is a phalaenopsis and yes cut the spike. Dab a little cinnamon on the cut end to help dry it out. I'd put it in a box with some wet cloth or moss to help keep it humid. When the sunlight is softer like in the late afternoon, I'd put the plant in some light to help it along. Pack it up well so it doesn't get jossled around during the trip. Colorado Springs is a nice town. You going to school there? It is cccccold in the winter though. Plan accordingly.
