Default water culture.

Hi everyone
Another newbie question...surprise, surprise :P
First I will start by saying that I'm a forum wh*re. haha
I was reading that some people have successfully saved phals with virtually no roots by putting them suspended in a jar of water. To be clear, the plant is in the water, not suspended over it.
They have left their phals in water after new roots appear, and say that the plant is thriving.
Have any of you more experienced people tried this?
The reason I'm asking is that lowe's in my area always has dying orchids on sale here (noid phals) and this would be a great way to build a collection of orchids at a really great price. I know a lot of people think noids are a waste of time....I ain't one of them. haha My orchids want more friends....other than the houseplants they have stared at for the past 3 years.
thoughts?

If a plant has lost its roots, it has no way to take up water, so keeping it from desiccating before it has a chance to regrow roots is the key to keeping it alive.

That said, whatever environment you expose the base of the plant to determines the structure of the roots on a cellular level, whether that be water, an inorganic medium, or a traditional organic one.

Those roots will be fine in that environment, but if you change that, they will be of no use and the plant will have to grow new roots 'tailored" to that new environment.

That last paragraph should be taken as a matter of degrees, not 'all or nothing", as there may be sufficient similarity between old and new that the existing roots may hang around for a while, even though they're not optimal.

Nice. thanks for this. I did not realize that an orchid with little or no root structure isn't necessarily a dead one. This is the main reason I have avoided big box orchids.

Hi I am currently growing a phal in water culture. It has been in there for a number of weeks and I was looking closely at it today and it is finally pushing out it's first root. When I have a few two inch long roots I intend to repot it into a sphag and bark mix. I will post a pic when there is more to see.
