I want to thank the forum members that replied to my post. I have re-potted the phalaenopsis in a much smaller clear plastic pot with multiple drainage holes in the bottom. In the process of doing that, I found that there were new roots growing which was exciting to discover. I also removed a few more old roots that were rotting. It has been three weeks since the re-potting and the plant seems to be doing much better. A new leaf has emerged and now has about 3 inches of growth. I am watering about once per week using a thorough soaking.
I have a new question. The plant had one root outside the planting medium. I accidentally cracked the shell of the root while re-potting. The tip of the root appears to have died and a new root has begun growing from this root on the plant side of the fracture. My question is should I leave the end of the root past the fracture alone or should I cut it off?
