Most phals and paphs are grown starting in spag and just potted on in more spag. They are put in 3-4 inch pots from 1-1/2 inch pots and spag is packed around them. When they flower they are sent to the stores. When they are growing in the greenhouses the air is moving quite a bit. Big fans circulate lots of humid air which helps keep the plant from drowning. Some folks can grow their orchids in moss. I never have been able to so I make up my own mixes depending on what the species is and how often it needs to be watered. The more it needs to be watered the more course the mix. That way I can water most at the same time.
