Various problems

1. Bleached spots on several paphiopedilums leaves.
Micranthum:

2. Something eats the leaves on my Masd. decumana:





3. Masd. constricta has lots of small round black dots on the leaves:


It all started just recently.
All these orchids have two things in common:
a) they all live in the basement - a bit cooler environment, some sun very early in the morning;
b) they all were sprayed with Safers Endall miticide twice little while ago.
But there are over 10 more paphs and at least 3 more masdies with same two things and they are perfectly fine.

Any ideas? Should I throw those plants away?

No, don't throw them away! Just isolate them a bit until you figure things out. Was your Masd. decuman outside before going to the basement? It looks like it could be a slug. Check the potting media for anything.

I'm not sure about the others, but I know one of my masdies got larger brown spots from heat stress. The other thing is if you are misting and it is cool it could cause spots. I don't find Endall very strong so can't see it having caused the spots on the Paphs, but I think they are a little more delicate than some types. Did you have spider mites?

I got lots of sort of rusty brown marks on some of my milts from misting them last winter when it was cool. I guess you just need to approach each issue separately! I'd find out what is eating the Masdie first! Good luck, hope some others can help.

Thank you for the fast reply Silken. I went and un-potted decumana. It is potted into sphagnum, I didn't find anyone there, but yesterday I was re-potting my phal. wilsonii that lives there too and the millipede ran out of the bottom hole of its pot and scared the heck out of me. Phal was standing on the different shelf of the same bookcase, but with all the legs - millipede could be pretty mobile. Would it munch on the decumana leaf?
I remember that originally decumana came with one hole like this, but now there are more.

I did mist constricta and left her wet in the cold basement, but so I did to my other masdies too. I though since they are cool growing - it would help them to be cool. I won't do it again.

I think millipedes are rather harmelss to the plant. I think I read that they eat other bugs in the soil, so may be a benefit. It makes me think it has a resident pest on the plant itself. can you spray with a bug spray? Or wash it very thoroughly and see if something detaches from it. In your basement I wouldn't think you would have something like a rabbit or rodent so must be a bug!

The second picture kind of looks like scale. They can also cause the yellow spot on the first picture. The yellow spot is where one of the scales sucked on the leaf.

The masdie does look like a snail or slug. Masdies also get black spots on the undersides of the leaves easy. I would make sure you don't have scales on the paph though and check for snails. The black spots are less of an issue than the other two. Good luck!

I can't say on the paph, but the two masdies look about like some of mine.

I think the first masdie has definitely been munched by something. Slug or earwig or something like that is my guess, I have several leaves on one of mine that look similar and I did catch a slug when I was looking one evening.

The dark spots on the second masdie are something my veitchianna got when it was kept in the house initially and I think they are heat stress. I've not had them on the new leaves since moving to the greenhouse (cooler) and using porous clay pots and moss (which gives evaporation cooling when kept moist).

You were so right about slugs. Look what I found in the random paphiopedilum pot:


How in the world did it get here, I grow indoors. And how do I get rid of them?
I am going to go through all pots and check, but is it enough to just remove the mature ones, or should I completely change the medium?

Orchideya, I remember reading about dipping orchid with their pots in the coffee solution. Google it. It should be harmless to your environment, and easy enough to do.

Lana is right...coffee will rid yourself of slugs...as a soak and sprinkle the coffee grinds on the media

in the future: egg shells pounded to tiny 2 mm bits and sprinkle them on top of the media; the calcium will be consumed by the roots to give you better blooms but will kill the slugs

one of your pots must have carried the slug in and it multiplied

About other things.
People from slippertalk suggested that white spots on the paphs are the signs of biosduval scale which is hard to get rid of. I found video on the net of a guy scraping it with toothbrush dipped in alcohol.
So, this weekend I am going to do a serious extermination.
My new media is soaking, I am going to unpot everything that lives in the basement, toothbrush them with alcohol, wash the pots and pot into new media.
