Question about Basal Keiki Female
Default Question about Basal Keiki

So I have read in numerous threads on here about unhealthy plants putting out basal keiki as a last ditch effort to ensure propagation of the plant. Should I be worried if a seemingly healthy plant has what looks to be a leaf like structure coming from the base? This phal I purchased in March in bloom, and re-potted it last night as the blooms fell off last week. The root system looks super healthy I had to only trim off two small roots that had a bit of rot on the end. However I was thoroughly surprised when I saw the leaf like structure coming from the base of the plant under a leaf. Is this the start of a basal keiki, and will it be able to continue to grow as it is right above the top of my medium and under an leaf on the mother plant?

Sorry the picture isn't so great, I wanted to add that when I was examining it I could see that it was something folded in half with "joints" which is why I keep referring to it as a leaf-like structure.

What phal is it ? A couple of species produce keikis - for example bellina, equistris, lueddemanniana, corningiana. You may have a species grex.
However, that said, I am not sure if that's a keiki.....

It's a Dtps I-Hsin Sun Beauty. It's not knobby like a new root, it's something folded in half (the pic is of the side of it) that's flimsy with a pointed tip. Not like any of the new roots that my other phals are putting out.

I had to go back 5 generations to find a species on Sun Beauty. Hopefully someone has this phal and can help you with what that is. The good thing about orchids is that you will find out as it grows !
I have 3 phals with basal keikis - and they are all F1 generation, with species as the parent or one of the parents

I wouldn't worry about it as long as the plant is healthy. They can put out basal keikis even when healthy. Let us know how it develops! Think of the spikes you can get off of such a big plant!

I can't really tell what that is in the pic, and don't really see what I should be looking at.
Well, unhealthy or crown rotted plants will put out keikis as a last ditch effort to survive, but healthy plants make them too. It all has to do with the plant's genetics.
