Wind problem
Default Wind problem

Hey all. I have a wind problem!
(no, not what you may think !).

I have started a modest collection of cymbidiums. Most are in small 90mm plastic pots. They are outside but undercover in my patio which is very sunny.

the other night there was quite strong winds and to my horror most had been blown off the outside sill and onto the concrete below.

The plants luckily survived and I have had to top up the mix on a few but other than that the escaped with out in major damage.

So, in light of this, does anyone have any tips or advice as to how to keep the pots from blowing down in high winds that won’t cost a fortune.

Cheers

Is there anything to which you can tie or wire them?

I would drop them down in heavy clay pots.

Can you put them on the ground? The higher up they are, the stronger the wind, so it might help if you can put them on ground level in heavy clay pots. I do this when we have strong winds here in Florida (for hurricanes, they come inside) and it really does make a difference. Just a thought...

I had something similar happen to my cattleyas when I moved them outside for the summer. I got a long plastic window box, poked a bunch of holes in the bottom, added a layer of pebbles for weight and then put in the orchids. It kept them safe during some bad storms.

thanks for the helpful replies. I bought a wire storage basket the other day and put all my small cyms in there all together. i put that basket up of the ground on two bricks. I plan to then upturn a clay pot and butt it up against the plants to stop them falling over.

cheers
