epiphyte0....orchids are predominately epiphytes and as such require a soilless mix of bark, charcoal, perlite, sphagnum moss, or lava rock, or some such medium to live in....the medium functions mostly to stabilize the plant in whatever pot or mount we choose for them to live in....cattleyas and vandas are picky about thier roots and will suffocate without large air spaces among the roots....your soil and sand will soon drown them....they also like to dry a bit between waterings, the vanda likes to be watered daily, so a hanging basket is most suitable for them to live in....hope this helps, gl and enjoy your orchids!
