Masdevallia mishap continued...

Hi Everyone,

I posted on here about a month ago about my masdevallia orchid that keeps loosing its bloom spike. I wouldn't necessarily say it is bud blasting, but I am not sure.

This is the exact orchid I have: Masdevallia wageneriana var. pteroglossa -

This orchid keeps getting new leaves and they have bloom spikes and a bloom, but then they die. I don't know how to fix it.

I have attached pictures of my orchid. It just lost the bloom stem. I checked it last night and it looked healthy, today the bloom is shrivelled...HELP!

What is your temperature and humidity?

Temperature ranges from 67 degrees F to 82 degrees F.

Humidity is the natural west coast humidity (I live in Vancouver Canada). Today the humidity in Vancouver was 85%.

I believe 82 degrees is a bit too warm for your plant.

I looked on OrchidWiz and this is a fairly cool grower. Your humidity should be great but summer temps are listed at max. 70F and down to 52 or 53 at night. even cooler in winter. It needs fairly low light as well. 82F might be pushing it.

Ok, So I have moved the orchid to a shaded window away from the warm area...we'll see what happens. Any thoughts on how long it will take to adjust to the new area?

Are you there Zoi2?? On your mark get set, Go!

If it was too warm and bright it will be happier right away. Another way to keep it cooler would be to pot it in a clay pot or maybe even setting your pot inside a clay pot would help. First Rays's has a great tip on his web site on keeping cool growing plants cool. I'll see if I can find it and put the link here.
