Does this Den look happy?
Default Does this Den look happy?

Hello,

I purchased this dendrobium frosty dawn a month or so ago. It's been doing well but in the last few days it has been showing some blackness around the base of one of the shoots (?). Also the skin around all of it appears to be getting a little black (especially the top), but all the new growth that is showing is nice and green. Does this look healthy? I had it planted in S-H until yesterday, I have decided that is not the medium for me. Now it's in a mix of bark and perlite.

Thanks for any insight.

-Todd

The roots are good and the canes are plump...the leaves have that certain sheen with just the right shade of green...
its a happy plant...but overpotted (a pot half that size will do just right)

Thanks Bud, I actually did think the pot was too large, I just didn't have anything that was a better fit at the time. I'll have to go pick something up today. Thanks for the info!

Just looks to me like the sheathy material is aging

Pot for the roots - I know sometimes Dens look overpotted because the growth is skinny compared to some other types of orchids, but roots may require more pot than the growth would suggest, but avoid an overly deep pot. Tho bottoms of pots can be filled with styro

Thanks Sonya, the aging sheath is okay then? I shouldn't be concerned?

Doesn't look concerning to me. If you want to, you can see if you can peel that off, and see what it looks like underneath
