Hi,

In my opinion doesnt mather the origin of the burned leaf, but if its a burn of somehow its an open door to fungus and bacteria. So you need to cut the damage area!
And isnt normal falling yellowish bottom leaves, specially on orchids that have monopodial growth, and once again you should fertilize those plants with a extra nitrogen.

I have had many burned orchid leaves from too much sun and besides being unsightly, I have NEVER had a problem with the burned areas getting any sort of fungus or bacteria infections. And if you cut a big fresh wound in the plant wouldn't that be a bigger opened door for an infection? If the burned area keeps getting worse and starts to spread then I would look into cutting the area off. Her plants look very healthy so for a few old leaves to die back seems to be normal to most of us anyway. The plants are growing new leaves and the roots are healthy. It would be a problem if the plant keeps dropping leaves of course and/or had bad roots. But that is just my opinion.

Hi,
Everyone treat plants diferently, whats important its the result.
Im just saying that cuting of the damage area is the protocol to follow, and after cutting of we could treat with toothpast and Cinnamon powder.
On the other side I dont see a healthy plant, and those few leaves are the leaves that the plant have! we can see only a small portion of the roots, and maybe some could be rot due to overwatering.
The plant doesnt have any sustention, need a tutor. Seems to be growing horizontality, and geting light rays on the reverse side of the leaves.

I would also think it's some kind of fungus or bacteria. Cut off the part of the leave and treat with Cinnamon powder as Tetouan suggested.

One question do you actually sprinkle/spray water on the leaves of the phals?

I don't know if there is a protocol to cutting off damaged leaves. You dont have to cut anything unless you want to. Everyone grows their plants differently like you said. There is always more than one way to do things. She already stated she waits for the plant to drie out before watering so I don't think that is the problem. There are a lot of good green root tips inside and outside of the pot. If it was root rot you wouldn't see that many green root tips. She also said the plants are in a south window that gets a lot of light. I think she may be giving them too much light. Since she said she lets them go bone dry before watering and they are in a very bright south window maybe she isn't watering them enough. Also with them being in the house the humidity might be too low. Maybe that is why the leaves are dropping. As far as the plants growing sideways, that is how they grow naturally in the wild so water doesn't sit in the crown. Some people actually pot their Phals like that.

Well sunburn or not, the phals are getting too much sun. Phals like just enough light to easily read in and no more or less. I usually give mine morning and afternoon sun and are a little shaded the rest of the day.

Also, I noticed that the burn was on a bottom leaf, which eventually falls off natually. And since your orchid has plenty of new growth, fooling sith it just won't be nessisary. One of my first phals got sunburn and I cut off half the leaf and it turned yellow and died along with the other bottom leaf.
