Well, you might be able to buy them there but you might have some CITES issues with bringing them back to the U.S. There's even this issue when bringing plants from Europe to the U.S. and vice versa. If you are going to bring anything back, you need to be absolutely sure that the seller has experience with CITES.
I know there is one guy on here (at least) that is currently living in Costa Rica. Hopefully he will see this when he gets on and help guide you better.
Have fun on your vacation!!!! And don't forget to look for them in the trees!!!
ryry - I'm not sure where Rincon is in relationship to Utuado but there is a wonderful orchid seller there.
Here is a link to his contact information, you can always have the plants shipped to you. I have bought plants from Eli and his son on Ebay and have never had a problem getting the plants. Good Luck and happy vacation.
You might not have a problem bringing them back. Puerto Rico is part of the United States. I have also seen eBay sellers ship to Puerto Rico and ship from Puerto Rico to the US. Good luck!
My deepest apologies! I was thinking Costa Rica?!!!! Duh.... You may not but it is still considered a province of the U.S., not a state. Not sure how CITES views provinces as opposed to states in their regulations.
Puerto Rico has a very limited amount of endemic species but there are a ton of orchid people there.
They also have the best heliconia collections on the planet.
I have no idea what the regulations are when it comes to importing since the days when I "imported" I brought plants in inside a plastic bag full of dirty underwear and smelly socks !
Those days are looooooong gone.
Guantanamo is cool but I have no desire to live the rest of my life there.
