Default Phalaenopsis leaf discoloration

Hello All!

I'm hoping you can help me address a problem I found on one of my phals. I ordered it in February, at which point it had a small new leaf growing. Its color looked light but normal for a brand new leaf. Since then, the leaf has grown out with a mottled appearance. Other than the color defect, the leaf is firm, and I don't detect any insects on it or in the pot. It was repotted in February after I received it in the mail.

I've heard that magnesium deficiency can cause discoloration on leaves, so I plan to try watering it with an epsom salt solution, because I figure that can't hurt. What else would you do if this were your plant? I have some Physan 20 on hand if needed.

In the pics you can see the small leaf it had when I got it, and then newer photos which show the problem.

What type of lights are you growing it under! It happend to me with my Phal using T5HO and it caused these patterns of bleaching! Maybe too strong light so I raised the T5 higher (about 10 inches above the leaf) and now back to normal color.

I've seen the same on a Phal, and I think it faded away as the leaf hardened off.

Hi Paphman, I just grow in my windowsills! They're east facing and don't get direct sunlight; just bright light in the morning that fades throughout the day. Thanks for your input!

Camille, that's good to know! I hope this one does the same...
