Welcome Jim from S.W. Gulfcoast of Florida!

You've come to the right place from my experience on this board. Lots of friends and great advice.

It's really tough to completely kill an orchid. They put up a good fight and sometimes give you a baby or two in the process of trying to survive.

Eagerly await your photos..........

I am about to attach 6 photos from my orchid infirmary. Assuming the pics work out, here are the captions, for what they're worth. Note these are old plastic tags and barely legible:

Pic 1: The tag reads: ONCIDIUM TYPE

PIC 2: HYBRID PHALAENOPSIS Dtps. 1-Hain New G??? Phal. SOGO Devinew

Pic 3: DENI??PROBIUM YELLOW AGE???F?ATUM

Pic 4: DENDROBIUM

Pic 5: No ID available

Pic 6: No ID here, either

Note these pics are reduced in size so may not be as tack-sharp and detailed as the originals. Sorry.

Jim, welcome to the Orchid Board. While I may not be able to be of help with the current issue, I will say that that new greenhouse is a good investment. You are already ahead of the game.

Those orchids are not in that bad of shape. The last batch I got were in about the same shape. As Vanessa stated, it seems pretty hard to kill an orchid. What is really cool is to see them spring to life and start new growth.

Dave

Hi Jim, and welcome. I agree with Dave, they don't look too bad. My first thought is they look like a repot into fresh medium would be in order. The old stuff looks pretty old and decomposed. I use a really open mix of bark and pearlite, it helps to avoid overwatering, which can be a major problem.

Last photo is a Phalenopsis. I noticed all the 'chids look pretty wet by my standards. FWIW, I'd suggest backing off the watering a bit. The medium shouldn't look so wet.

The last 2 are definitely phalaenopsis and are looking good .. great aerial roots ..No 6 phal - I'd leave the withered leaf, it may just be sunburn and the plant will drop it when it's ready to. No 5 phal is nicely light green at the crown and it's little leaf is looking good. Remember DO NOT let water sit in the crown or rot will develop. Phals need bright light but not direct light so keep them shaded or under dappled conditions.
The No 4 Dendro has some new growth
No 3 is a dendro which .. I don't grow so I can't help you there .. but it looks good
No 2 phal looks to have some rotted roots - when repotting, I would cut off with a sterlized sharp scissors or razor blade - especially if the roots are mush and black - you can tell they aren't healthy when you gently feel them between your fingers and there is no firmness just mush. ( White, green and sometime brown roots are fine)
No 1 the oncid looks good but I can't help you with those cause I'm just no good with them -
I would repot and get an idea of what is going on with the root system. There are a few different mediums and you might want to read up on that first .. you can find that in the search topic .. I use KK mix which is a combo of coconut husk chips, charcoal, airstones and perlite. You can use a bark mixture. Some people use sphag moss which I prefer to stay away from - it has caused root rot with my phals. Under your conditions, sphag might be ok. Again ... read ! You can look up 'medium', 'sphag moss', 'bark', 'repot' and any other keywords pertaining to repotting under the search option for past threads.

Repeating Ross, I would be careful about overwatering ( I know my hybrid phals like to dry out between watering)
I hope this has helped a bit
No worries though - your orchids look good

You can also go to the Home option under the Site Map to the left and go to the care sheets for phalaenopsis (or just click here - http://www.orchidboard.com/Phalaenop...ure-Care-Sheet) and dendrobium (or just click here - http://www.orchidboard.com/Dendrobiu...ure-Care-Sheet)
