Congrats on the new camera! That's a gorgeous cattleya you have. I agree, black velvet is the best for black backgrounds. the nap of it absorbs a lot of the light rather than reflecting it back. I've mentioned on other posts, but if you can't find it, go to a local thrift store, buy a velvet skirt and rip out the seems. That's what I did and it is just fine!
By setting the backdrop a foot or more behind the plant, you should get a darker background and also remember to let the camera 's light meter read from the flower, not the black, or it will try and over-expose the photo and turn the black into grey.
