Congrats on the new camera! That's a gorgeous cattleya you have. I agree, black velvet is the best for black backgrounds. the nap of it absorbs a lot of the light rather than reflecting it back. I've mentioned on other posts, but if you can't find it, go to a local thrift store, buy a velvet skirt and rip out the seems. That's what I did and it is just fine!

By setting the backdrop a foot or more behind the plant, you should get a darker background and also remember to let the camera 's light meter read from the flower, not the black, or it will try and over-expose the photo and turn the black into grey.

Very nice! I have the same camera. I buy the least expensive body and spend the extra money on lenses. I like to hike and photograph birds and nature in general and I appreciate the lighter weight of the "Rebel" series bodies.
Enjoy!

Thanks for the comments and advice. Like life, it is a work in progress. I am eager to take photos of my Thai orchids when I get back there next week.
Cheers, all.

I am in a New York apartment so I do not have the luxury space of indoor photography and lighting...I use the noonday sun and the sky as my background
