Ruffled Phal Petals & Lips? Female
Default Ruffled Phal Petals & Lips?

Hi Everyone!

As a newbie I'm curious how often Phals have ruffled petal and lip edges. Is it common? Rare? None of my other phals have ruffles. They're all very smooth edged. Educate me please!

It's not what I would accurately call a rare trait in Phals. It's what geneticists call a recessive trait.

Ah, okay--thanks! I've never seen one ruffled like that but then again, I am new to the whole orchid thing.

Being a recessive trait it's only expressed with two copies of the allele, so how often do breeders try to achieve that arrangement? Not asking for statistics, just if it's considered a valuable trait or a fault in the orchid community.

Thank you King!

I'm not consciously aware of anyone purposefully breeding this trait into Phals, but I imagine someone has thought about it.

The question of whether it is a valuable trait or not depends on how good your marketing skills are.

LOL I suppose breeding orchids is very different than breeding Siberians. Traits in Sibes are either valued (good) or faults (bad) and I was thinking about it in those terms. Probably need to shift paradigms.

Thanks, King!

The color is gorgeous!! I've seen a bit of ruffling on some Phals before, and it's mostly on the thin petaled ones. I don't think ruffling is something Phal breeders strive for, you see it more in Catts.
