You were right King of orchid growing... all roots were mush, not a single one alive!
I'm impressed that bud even opened. I'll now concentrate all my efforts on not killing my others lol

To answer your question about the bud...

When the plant is so stressed out that it feels threatened, it will start to divert it's energy into bailing its own genetics out. It will either put all of its energy into blooming, or it may put all of its energy into throwing out a keiki, or it could do both.

This is why when your plant is in peril, many people say to remove the spike. Too much energy is spent on reproduction for the purposes of bailout, which usually does not succeed if it throws out an inflorescence. The plant's only good chance of survival is energy conservation and good care from the grower.
