What type of Orchid do I have and reblooming help
Default What type of Orchid do I have and reblooming help

Hello all

I inherited an Orchid and I'm not that good in the garden. Anyway, can you help me identify what type of Orchid I have and how do I rebloom it? In particular where do I cut the stems/nodes?

Here is a picture of my Orchid:

Orchid

I leave it by a south facing window and water it once a week. I have some Orchid food too but don't give it too much as it, I think, still winter for it.

Thank you very much for any help. I really want my Orchid to be happy.

Regards

Tom

You have a phalaenopsis. It is in need of a repot! Cut the spikes about an inch away from the base of the plant. You will have to get some orchid media. Bark or the like. Winter depends on where it lives not where it is from. If you are hitting spring there, so is it.

Oh dear! That outgrew it's pot about 2 years ago! Definitely needs a repot. If you search the forum I believe there is a video posted somewhere on how to repot.

Thank you for identifying it and tips.

When you say cut the spikes, do you mean the green stem that used to have the flowers?

I'm a little bit stupid when it comes to these things.

I will be repotting it now too. I watched a video of someone repotting an Orchid and they mentioned roots, if there are bad roots do I cut them out?

And yes it is nearly spring here (London, UK) but it's still cold.

Yes, the spike is the stem that held flowers. We were all stupid to begin with. Yes cut any roots that are mushy or hollow but leave the good ones. I have seen videos that show them cutting back good roots.

Does the pot have to be clear? I read somewhere that it doesn't for this particular type of Orchid but just wanted to double check.

The pot does not have to be clear, you can use a clay orchid pot. I'm a beginner and all my orchids are in clear pots. That way I can see what color the roots are. For Phalaenopsis, green roots=no water, silver roots=need water, black roots=root rot.

clear pots might be hard to find for Socrates...how about go find yourself a clear food take out plastic container and use your kitchen knife to bore holes on the sides and at the bottom? you have an instant net pot right there!
find yourself a watering/fertilizer regimen...your plant seems dehydrated

No, it does not have to be clear, but it does help to keep an eye on the roots. You can certainly use a clear food container. I use a phillips screwdriver and get it hot on the stove and melt holes in the plastic.

Thanks, I have found a pot which I didn't know existed (in a cupboard hidden away). It might be too big but I will have to see.

The Orchid is thirsty - judging from what I can see from your advise (some roots seem silvery). I have watered it now, a bit more than I usually give it.

With regards to the Orchid media - I have googled this and still can't see a solution - either I buy 2kg of this stuff, make my own, or don't use it. Does the Orchid need bark/charcoal/etc.? If so, can anyone recommend a shop online in the UK?

Thanks once again.
