Question Hands-on learner looking for help

As a newbie with a small orchid collection my ideal learning scenario would be to have someone who is experienced come see my collection and help me. I know that might be a tall order but am I being unrealistic to think I can find someone who may want to do that? I don't learn well from just reading books when I'm just starting to learn about a subject. Any suggestions from the forum would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome! I just asked my local orchid society if there was a mentor program, and there was! If you are near one, I'd suggest asking them. If they don't then you should join just to make friends there. They will have people all levels of experience you can learn amazing things from!

Welcome to Orchid Board! There are some YouTube videos on some orchid subjects like repotting.

When I was a novice I went to the local Orchid Society and after the 2nd meeting I asked the one lady I met there if she would come out and take a look. She did, I paid her for an hour and it turned my whole experience around !!!

Welcome! A local orchid society would be your best hands on experience. Input from lots of knowledgeable people and you get to actively participate. Our society has features such as show and tell, problem corner and a presentation every month. I'm sure most are similar. In the spring we often do a demo on re-potting so that new members can actually see how its done and ask unlimited questions. There are many other benefits to joining a society as well.

Yes, definitely find your "local" orchid society, you'll have a far higher chance of finding someone that lives near you than on OrchidBoard (that said, there may be people on OrchidBoard that live near you).

You don't say where you live. You can also go online at american orchid society and they have all the orchid clubs listed. There are thousands. If not one near you find any gardening club. Many people dabble in orchids even if they only have one.

I'm from South Florida, by the way. I appreciate your input and will look into your suggestions. Thanks, again!
