I was curious what the time frame for orchids from the beginning of a spike until it actually flowers? I am sure this varies based on the species too but just wanted to know?

A month and a half to three months(my hybrid Phals spike quickly then bud to bloom and my Aerangis biloba is on its third month and its just opened one flower...the other 8 buds are still closed)...do not change position of the plant when in spike, I move the plant to my centerpice table when it is in full bloom but not until it opens the buds...bud blast can happen

In the summer, one of my Vandas was 1 month from little spike nub to first bloom opening, and then the same Vanda took about 2 months in the fall. My Phals are usually about 3 months.

My Phals also average 3 months. The slowest one I have is a Psychopsis: nearly 5 months!

I was just about to post up a question like this.

My Phal. Burning Sand (Seminole x violacea) had a 1" spike when it got to me on 12 Jan and now its about 4" long with at least two buds showing. So, its been about two months in my care. I assume because of the violacea in it that it would be a slow spike and flower formation. Correct?

Okay...you want a fast blooming one? I have a Maxillaria camaridii that shot out a bud and opened its flowers in 9 days(the flower opens its blooms only at night and its closed in the daytime=also fragrant and white) then after three days the flower wilts and in two weeks the petals turn like the wings of a dragonfly...(all in all this flower's lifespan was less than 2 weeks)
* but its a sequential bloomer so next month I will have blooms again

I'm curious. Is there any type of special resin for preserving blooms so you could make earrings/pendants/whatever out of your favorite orchid bloom?

The spike that lives forever...there can be only one!
