A few tips to get you started:
Water, then let dry completely, even in the middle. Root rot can occur if the medium (bark, moss) stays too wet. These grow on trees so the medium's sole purpose is to keep humidity around the roots. The medium should dry in three or four days. Don't get water on the leaves (especially in the center) as the water can foster bacteral and fungual infections. They like a bright window, no direct light. Always make certain that after you water, the water drains completely from the pot. If you repot, lava rock works great but most people use bark, coconut husk chips, and many other things with equal success. Hope this helps. Good luck!

To our forum !!! Take and use what you can. You'll find ten different tips from ten different orchid growers but you're the one that has to sort them out. Don't be afraid to experiment with a new idea especially if something is wrong. I do not worry about wetting the leaves and the center. I take all my Phals and others into the kitchen sink and use the sprayer on the whole plant. I DID find that air circulation is VERY important and if you don't have it, then you SHOULD worry about wetting the center (crown) of your Phals.. I installed a ceiling fan in every orchid room of my house and they stay on 24/7. I DON'T have ANY fungal problems as a result. I used to before the fans, which are on full blast pulling up towards the ceiling which makes it come down around the edges of the room where my plants are all on shelves and you can see their leaves swaying in the breeze. Hope that helped !!!
