I'm curious if anyone else grows these and how they grow them.

I recently bought a hanging glass terrarium and was thinking about putting it in there, but am unsure what I should put in with it. I was thinking putting sphag in the base and then putting something like tree fern on top and placing the Chiloschista segawai ontop. Does this seem appropriate? What other growing solutions would there be for a glass terrarium such as this? Is the glass globe terrarium even a good idea for this particular one?

I do have an actual terrarium for orchids that remains at about 80 percent humidity. Would it be better if I just sat it up high in a branch so it could get a lot of light from my grow light?

Hi Paul. I have one of these and it is currently growing in my GH on a small clay pot with bright 50% shaded light. It is also currently blooming. I haven't had it that long so I'm still kind of winging it, but with good results. As for terrarium's, I don't have any experience with them. I would maybe drape it over a limb and give it bright light, but not too bright. I would rather grow it too dark than too bright. Good luck. Hope maybe some if this helps.

I grew a Chsch segawai for several years...IMO, they are relatively easy.

I had it mounted on cork w/a healthy pad of sphag under the roots and I watered it once a day. In the Summer if the temps were exceptionally high I might water it a second time. Phal light and Intermediate temps. It bloomed better and better every year until it died.

They aren't all that long lived and can be quite healthy and then will begin to decline for no apparent reason. That's when it's on it's way out.

Personally, I would be hesitant to grow it in an enclosed terrarium because of the lack of air flow.

Thank you for the information guys.

Katrina, that saddens me to hear it's short lived.

The terrarium I'm talking about actually has two holes in it. Here recently, someone posted their Masdie in one. I also have another one of these hanging globes and put two high humidity orchids in them and they loved it. They just keep on blooming, lol...

So, my understanding of Chsch segawai is that they need a lot of humidity to survive. Is that not accurate then? That was the whole reason I was going to put them inside another glass bulb terrarium given the success of the other one.

A very easy orchid in my experience. I grow it on a cork slab, no sphag with my Phals on a window sill facing north, so light is moderate.
Temps are 17-20 °C in winter, 25-28 °C in summer. Humidity usually 75%, in winter occasionally drops to 60%. I spray with RO water and few drops of a 3-4-6 liquid fertilizer every morning, twice a day in summer.
That's all. It has grown a lot in summer, then it slowed down considerably in winter and is blooming now.
