Help! Buds falling off Cym.
Exclamation Help! Buds falling off Cym.

Hi everyone,
I'm brand new to orchids. My boyfriend got me a beautiful cymbidium for valentine's day and I'm already killing it. I've been reading a bunch online and have a few questions:

1) Is it too close to the window? There are some dark spots on the leaves which I understand might be sunburn.
2) Do I have crown rot and what do I do?
3) When I woke up this morning the buds on one of the stems had all turned brown and were falling off. There are two at the top left. What can I do to save them and do I need to clip where the buds used to be?

Thanks so much for your help!

Cymbidiums are tough.
More than likely the blooms are dying off naturally ( only last about 4-6 weeks ). From what I can see, your plant seems OK. Only clip the stem once all flowers have fallen off. My plants take about 5 hrs of sun every day and do well. Just ensure that the pot has holes and does not stand in water and you only water about 1x per week. Its best to water at the sink if you can and allow tepid water to run out through the bottom of the pot. ( water about a gallon through )

meant to add that if you grow naturally ( not under lights ), the plant is going to look "messy", with lots of dead=looking "stuff". You have to worry if any brown/black spots are mushy, or have a tendency to spread.

sometimes the flower buds "blast" (ie die) when there is a change in climate, etc. May not be anything that you are doing wrong.

Could be finished blooming - my Cym blooms usually last around 3 months, tho plants are outside in cool temps (last longer in cooler temperature) - if all the blooms were open when you got the plant there is no way to know how long it had already been blooming.
If it's in the path of warm air heat blowing, that could cause blooms to prematurely wither.

It would be difficult to get a Cym too much sun in a window, they like a good deal of light.
It's also difficult to rot growth on Cyms (in my experience anyway), so long as plants aren't standing in water for long periods.

From what I can see, your plant looks good
