Phal new leaves and spikes
Default Phal new leaves and spikes

Hi All,
When do Phalaenopsis start growing new leaves? Do they grow one a year? Are spikes associated with new leaves?
Thanks,
Cym7

I find phals can grow leaves at any time of the year, with the most growth starting in spring and lasting thru summer. I usually get 1 leaf, but every once in a while a second will start.
Depending on the species the blooming time can vary. Hybrids can bloom at any time. The spike will generally emerge from between the oldest leaves. It helps in most cases to give the phals a 15-20 degree temperature drop at night to initiate the blooming cycle.

Good luck, Bill

after the Phals give the spike and bloom all the energy it needs...they also rest and then gear up to producing new leaves and roots after the flowers are gone...I observed my Phals after the spikes shred flowers then dries up and turn brown; I have to cut it and then a little leaf sprouts fast and suddenly grows big as theres new roots coming out too...
the spike gone is a trigger to form leaves and new roots and gather enough energy again to supposrt a new spike and blooms...
