curious phal spike
Don't know what happened with this spike? All of my phals are blooming just fine, good flower count etc. Then there's this one... it sent out a spike and it just kinda petered out. It started to form what I thought were kiki's (it might be hard to tell from my pics) but for the last month it's done nothing at all. I assumed it would be a nice bloom with the spike branching out but????? Let's see here... it has good roots, gets fertilized like the others at 100-125ppm nitrogen so I don't think its getting to much nitrogen. Anyone ever have this happen?

The plant hasn't been chilled or had any other stressors that I know of.

Hard to tell from the pictures, but it appears that something happened to the spike tip (cold, heat, bugs, cats, kids, wife). I wouldn't worry too much about it unless it happens again.

I'd cut it
down to above the second node. If it is bacterial, you don't want it spreading down.
Also - you will probably get another spike developing from the 2nd node, so you win !

That's a good idea orchidsarefun. I wouldn't want some kind of infection speading down to the plant and it obviously wants to bloom. Will perform surgery tomorrow. Thanks

I thought spikes were one way streets in regards to transmission of disease. Anybody confirm?

I'd leave it alone. If it's dry and there's no sign of spreading infection I see no point in cutting it. You're likely to do more harm than good.
