Default Water Culture

Hello everyone,
I was just wondering if anyone has heard of 'Water Culture' for orchids.

Website: Water Culture

I have read from other forums that it is a very effective way of growing orchids with no rest period.

What are your thoughts?

Has anyone tried this method?

Rod Venger, the originator of the idea before getting out of orchids, told me that he had to maintain heating mats under his containers, as if the water temperature dropped below 70°F, he had problems, and he had to maintain algae in them, or the smell was horrific.

Based upon my experience with s/h culture, I suspect that if he had changed the water often, that might not have been an issue.

Keep in mind that orchids do much of their gas exchange through the roots, so the chemistry of that solution will change rapidly, which is another reason for frequent changes.

Hi Ray,
I was a bit sceptical when I read about total water culture.

I have killed my Lucky Bamboos sitting in water. I didn't know the water has to be changed regularly.

I will continue with my quest to change my phals to s/h.

My african violets are doing very well in s/h, the root growth in one month is really quite amazing.

I hope the phals will do just as well. That is the next project for this weekend!

Thanks for your reply.
