Blc care

I got a beautiful Blc. shinfong little son 'young-min golden boy last march and I did a search on this site and there were "no matches" for Blc. I was surprised, maybe the search engine is down...anyhow, when I got it there were beautiful BRIGHT orange flowers on it. Its gotten some new growth this year but seems to grow slowly. I have it in a NE window which might get about 20 minutes of sun a day and bright light all day. Its in a mix of bark, charcoal and those round little balls of clay(?). I water it 2X a week because it dries out quickly, its on a humidity tray, I used to mist it but stopped misting all of my orchids about a month ago. I live in a very dry climate. Any suggestions on what I have?

A Blc. is a cross between a brassavola, a cattleya and a laelia. There's a Blc. Shinfong Little Boy or a Pot. Shinfong Little Sun but I don't see a Blc. Shinfong Little Son. In any case it's basically treated like a cattleya. Bright light but not direct sun during the middle of the day. An open potting mix that dries quickly. The mix you have sounds fine unless it's deteriorating. In that case you would need to repot it. Let it dry out completely between waterings. Give as much humidity as possible. Fertilize lightly now and the regularly after you see new growths starting. Probably in a couple months (Spring time). It sounds like you're doing everything about right actually. Good luck.

Thats good to know, thank you. I had a problem with it "falling out of its pot" and I finally got smart, put it in a smaller pot and put a piece of coat hanger accross the pot to hold it in place, an earthquake couldn't move it now! It does look very healthy and I guess I am doing the right thing. The potting mixture is less than a year old.

Quite a lot of site search engines (including OB's I think) ignore anything of 3 letters or shorter - bit of a problem when you search for Blc...

Cattleyas love early morning sun. Outdoors in the summer here in NJ they get five or six hours of early morning sun and then bright light the rest of the day. Inside in the winter they're in the south window as close to the glass as they can get.

Give your cattleya as much light as you can give it without burning the leaves. Feel the leaves. If they are warm pull the plant back. If they are normal, move the plant closer.

The leaves should be light olive green. Dark green is an indication of not enough light.

Cattleyas like to be watered well and then allowed to dry out.
