I know what you mean about Hydroton. I had orchids on shelves on fences in s/h for the summers in Ontario. It worked great except if a squirrel or wind knocked one over I chased the little balls. I am trying out some lava rock now and have no squirrels here in Bc.. I think that so far I like the lava better but maybe will re pot more often to avoid mineral build up.

While you tell us its a Cat.
What is it?
How has it come to get in this state?
Knowing these things helps us decide if the sphag (becomes shagged or not) is the right advice.
Not really knowing the temps up there in Chicago but down here we may even adopt the option of mounting on a piece of suitable timber wrapping a bit of nylon stocking around sphag bandage an making sure its well watered. Good luck

I can totally relate to this situation. I overwatered my cattleya and rotted all the roots off. This past summer I made a pot clip and secured the plant in the pot to keep it from moving. I'm using sphag and I tried to keep the humidity up my misting the whole plant often. KLN doesn't hurt. I did see some shrivelling of the canes that made me panic, so I covered the whole plant in a clear plastic bag, again for humidity.

It had been MONTHs with no progress. Up until a month or so ago, I started to see 2 growths. Growth is slow, but better than not seeing anything. Patience is definately needed with orchids.
