I'M NEW AT THIS, SO I NEED SOME INPUT FROM A PHAL. ENTHUSIAST, PLEASE! RECENTLY, WE HAD A SHELF BREAK AND A COUPLE OF PHALS. BROKE OFF. SO, I PUT THEM IN A VASE, AND SEVERAL WEEKS LATER I NOTICED NEW GROWTH ON ONE! I'M AMAZED! IF ANYONE CAN GIVE ME INSIGHT TO THIS WONDER, I'D BE SO GRATEFUL!

I would say that to encourage phals to grow you need to raise temperatures to hot (85F-90F) and slightly more light. In addition to hot temperatures, you need more air circulation and humidity. And also the growth cycle depends on the species or individual plants. My phal bellina only grows 2 leaves per year each spring, flowers during summer, and does nothing the rest of the year. My phal aphrodite grows really rapidly. This summer it has grown 5 leaves, and flowers during the winter. So it may just be the plant growth cycle. Good luck.

I don't really do anything special for Phals. They just do what they want. However, warmer temperatures and higher light, as well as a high-nitrogen fertilizer, would help induce new foliar growth.

LBITTICKS, I don't understand what broke off of your Phal. and what you put in the vase,I have a few Phal's in my collection and they seem to be very easy to grow for the most part, but there is always the tough one, my Phals don't mind the roots being damp all the time but being in a vase with the roots wet all the time I would think you would get root rot not new growth but if you got new growth many congrats to you, you must be doing something right.

Lbitticks I understand that you are new here so maybe I can help you get the answer's you seek. If you post your question in the Phalaenosis Alliance fourm you will get more Phalaenosis experts to see it and can answer your question. By starting your question in the middle of someone else's thread, only a limited number of people will see it. If you need any more help using the board don't hesitate to ask.

After reading your question and thinking about it for a while I have a question for you. What broke off? A picture is worth a thousand words If it was a spike that had flowers on it? it may be a keiki or baby plant from the mother plant. Again if this the case I would not allow the roots to remain in the water I would take some sphagnum moss and orchid mix and pot it in a small pot and keep moist until it becomes well established.

Btw,.... thanks for the info. I will increase the light and see what happens from there.

I think it'll all just be trial and error in the end!

Remember increasing the light doesn't mean putting it in direct sunlight! .. That will surely burn the leaves.
