Brassavola nodosa - pot or mount? Male
Default Brassavola nodosa - pot or mount?

Hello,

I have a new Brassavola nodosa that is currently in a 3" pot. It needs to be repotted and I'm not sure whether it should be potted or mounted.

I am a windowsill grower so mounting would be an issue to a degree (always can take to bathroom to water - mist).

I'm looking for opinions, please. Also, if potted what medium should I use?

This particular species of Brassavola is ok to grow potted.

neither. Net pot with a mix of leca and a some pieces of sphagnum and maybe coco chips. Stick the net pot into a tad larger clay pot. I have a Brassavola Little Stars that is doing fine like this.

I would mount it if I ran a humidifier every day. At HD or Lowes they sell a cheap digital thermometer / hygrometer for 10 / 12 $. My humidity now that the heat is blasting can be as low as 16/ 20 %.
A bit higher in the bathroom. I have some mounts but many of those (the smaller ones like Tolumnia and Encyclia) i stick them into the Ikea vase "Vasen" with a inch of water at the bottom. I do not believe in humidity trays but a vase as tall as the mount actually increases the humidity. Humidity vase.

I partly agree with Stefpix, and entirely with King (You learn to listen to Phillip quick...). It's ok in a pot if that is what you want, I'd just recommend an airy mix as suggest by Stefano, not something like Sphagnum moss or really small bark.

I did at one point in time receive a series of photos that depict Brassavola nodosa growing on rocks, if that means anything.

They are lithophytic or epiphytic orchids.

Medium grade to large grade bark is good enough.
