Did I screw up my Dendrobium? Male
Default Did I screw up my Dendrobium?

Hi All -- First off, Happy New Year! I am excited to start my countdown to spring.

I have been growing a couple of Dendrobiums since October -- both were purchased right before bloom and they were really awesome when they did bloom.

Now that blooming is done, am I doing the correct thing by continuing to water them weekly as I have been doing? I ask because I read about a rest period, but I can not imagine they don't need water??

This is what I have done and this is what has happened thus far after the bloom:

- Continue to water weekly
- Fertilize Every other week
- New shoots (see image below) have spiked from the bottom of the stalks -- I am wondering if this is a good thing or not -- I know sounds strange to be concerned on new growth, but I am concerned that the plant needs rest?

Anyway, thanks in advance for any advice / information.

Jared

Happy New Year, Jared! With the exception of one of my Dens they all have sprouts on them since before they went to rest for the winter. One other is in full leaf so, all in all, I think you're doing just fine.

Thanks Kelo -- Happy New Year to you as well!

Thanks for the info...what am I supposed to do when they "rest" and how do I know when this takes place? Any tips...they are great plants I can't wait until they bloom again -- I know patience!!

LOL don't water them too much for the time being. I'm not the best person to ask about Dens but the couple I have years ago I didn't give much water at all during the winter until after they had flowered so it depends on what type you have.
