:hmm I find that ironic that someone can't grow Masdevallias in a part of the US that's cooler than Southern California.

I personally know I can grow quite a few species here in SoCal and it is not a terribly humid place, nor does it snow here either. I've proved it's possible to grow Masdevallia species in the past, and I'm still currently growing some now. Go figure. :dunno: :scratchhead:

If you're honest about preferring hybrids over species, then all the more power to you. I've already given you my picks of Masd hybrids for what I think would possibly do well for you.

:goodluck:

Here is the list of Masdevallia hybrids that I have purchased::

- Masd. Peach Fuzz
- Masd. Angel Frost
- Masd. Rosemary
- Masd. Copper Angel
- Masd. Sunset Jaguar
- Masd. Marguerite
- Masd. Prince Charming.

The Masdevallia floribunda are doing very well, but the Masdevallia decumana are experiencing a very slow death.........

NeoNJ, is your decumana still alive? And how is your Masd. Prince Charming growing?
I have just ordered these two and constricta and found this thread while looking for info on the culture (obviously should have done it before ordering).
From this thread decumana seems now too difficult . I am wondering if yours perked up?
Thanks

I wish I had Good news for you ......

but sadly, the decumana died within 2-days of receiving it ....but long enough for me to see and admire the one flower it had.

and the Prince Charming is doing nothing ...and I mean nothing.....no growth, no new leaves, no nothing ! I'm not impressed.......

Sorry to hear about decumana.
As for Prince Charming - you didn't have it for a long time yet, maybe it is still adjusting?
I have just one masdie - masdevallia amplexa, I got it last October to try out and it was sitting there doing nothing for about three months and then sprouted two new growths at once at the end of January(that's when I decided to order more masdies):

Maybe yours need some time to adjust too.

Wow, sad to hear that. But glad to hear I'm not the only masdie killer, lol... Yet I keep trying over and over again.

Mine grow well, but I have yet to get a spike to bloom all the way despite one having put out at least 15 spikes and likely more than that. I have lost count. I have moved it yet again to see if location is the culprit. It again has about 4 or 5 happy green spikes which I consistently kill and turn yellow :(

Silken, are you talking about decumana? Do you grow it indoors?
Thanks

LOL, LOL. Yeah, I have killed many Masdies, most species, I don't do well with species of any type of orchid .....

However, my "Hybrid" Masdies are doing wonderfully, and all of them are spiking !!!

Oh my, now I'm jealous, LOL...
