experimenting with potting vandas
I decided to try and pot couple of my adult common vandas, to see if it would work.
I curled the roots into unglazed clay pot, put packing-peanuts in between roots and on the top - a handfull of bark pieces into one pot and a handful of chc into another pot. Humidity here is about 60% and eventually will go down to 50-ish. I am planning to water every three days and mist exposed roots every day and see how it goes.
Did anybody else try this method? What was the outcome? How often did you water?
Thanks.

They look very nice. Much neater than my vandas with the roots hanging down all over the place. Let us know how your experiment works out.

The only thing I have heard is to put old roots in hanging baskets, so you still have good air circulation. I have my baby vandas in pots, but those are new roots. Good Luck, let us know how they work out.

I will tell you right now, your "experiment" is going to work out fine. I grow all my Vandas potted. I've had some growing this way for several years already.

I grow all of my vandas in pots, in large lava chunks and have had success with blooms.

Those are neatly done and it seems you have a happy plant...it also saves you on watering it often...I have recently posted my vanda potted one in bloom given to me by my mother:

The president of our orchid society grows all her Vandas (and those are over 50 plants) in pots since many many years. She uses bark (big chunks) as a substrat... Ant it works fantastic for her...

It is nice to hear that it is doable. I have 13 vandas hybrids and species at the moment, most of them are small and in glass vases, watering them every day takes time, but my wish list includes over ten more now and it grows like everyday, so if I could grow them in pots it would be so great!
Bud, your plant is huuuuge and so beautiful.
Hope mine will live to that size .

Another variation of this would be to use the wooden slat baskets typically used and put lava rock and/or coir in it. That is what I have done with my Vanda's and various vandaceous orchids. Before I did this, they were doing alright, kinda just hanging in there. Once I added the lava rock and/or coir the roots have gone MAD! LOL... I had never thought of actually putting them in pots though. I guess that's because I no longer have room to grow in pots - (ok, I'll admit it, I did just buy a Phal gigantea, but it's just a sweat little baby, only 2 inches big from leaf tip to leaf tip, lol...).
