Default VANILLA PLANIFOLIA

I always wanted a vanilla orchid, but after reading it can grow on average 3-5 feet a year I decided my mother wouldn't appreciate me turning her dining room into a jungle. But since I recently bought a 6'x8' greenhouse (as many of you already know) I'm again thinking about purchasing one. Space still will be an issue, and I'll probably have to prune back a few feet every couple of years. My question is, would pruning be harmful to the plant, and does anyone grow one of these and is willing to share some tips? Thanks!

I grow this in my house, outside in summer and near a south facing window in colder seasons. My potting 'soil' is made up of lava rock, sand, vermiculite, perlite and bark (I think that is all I put in there). I bought PVC pipe and put this in the bottom of the pot, put shards of a clay pot around it for stability, and then filled the pot with the mixture. I put the vanilla's roots near the top. I wrapped the PVC pipe with paper towels and floral moss and spray it daily for the aerial roots that are growing into it. Old towels instead of paper towels would have been a much better decision. I secured this with floral wire. It takes a while to get established and grows 'slowly' but then it just goes crazy. Mine doesn't like to get water in the growing tip (where the new leaf is forming) in colder weather. I have some other vanillas growing on towels up my shelving. I keep the towels damp for the roots. If you trim, it grows from a lower node, fear not. A botonist told me he makes a frame of aluminum fencing and wraps the vanilla around this as it grows to keep it under control. In the house, I don't have the room for this so I use the pipe (I can add to it). The sap can cause a rash but I haven't experienced this. I hope this helps. Good luck!

WOW! Thanks for the info...I was given a large vanilla plant but when I saw it was in a 2 gallon pot; with a 6 foot wooden trellis and can grow up to my ceiling...I didnt take it...but I can do the cylindrical wire to wrap the plant around it and if it gets too overwhelming: I can just prune it.

Aluminum fencing--chicken wire fencing. Oops. I still don't know if that is the name for it. Good luck,

there is a cylindrical wire or a conical wire sold at the home depot garden department that you just stick in a pot ... usually it has basic four wires and another set of circular wires welded around it...but chicken wire fence is also doable

They also like to dry out between waterings at least once per week or you will get root rot. Mine have done very well in a mixture of bark and compost.
