Arrow Show us your new spikes!

I guess this must be the season for new orchid growth, at least with the Phalaenopsis species. I can't get over how fast some of them are growing. On my first phal, I noticed a swelling at a node on the old main spike in the first week of October. By the first week, something was sticking out of it--a new spike! In just one week, it started showing an accelerated growth rate. Now, on Nov 11th, look at it.

My second phal started spurting forth new growth as well, at the base and on the main spike. New stuff all around...

New shoots off the main spike.

Three existing spike ends suddenly started extending forth.

Anybody else got some nice growth going? If so, show us your spikes!

Oh one other thing, I didn't use any fertilizer during this period, so this is all natural. I'm also kind of impressed with how fast the "phal 1" has taken off, as the plant went through some stress (significant root rot, stress spots from cold droplets on the leaves while outside, and a fungus gnat infestation that I cured with diluted Dr. Bronner's peppermint oil). The roots are coming back pretty nicely and a new leaf is emerging to replace one that is starting to yellow at the tip.

"Phal 2" is just incredibly hearty. It puts my other phal to shame in the number of leaves and roots it has. It gave a rather anemic showing of just 5 flowers back in April/May, so I'm hoping this time around it'll have a more abundant bloom.

Awesome! Yay for spikes!

I don't have any Phal spikes, but do have Dens, Oncidiums, and Cym spikes!

1. never-blooming noid Den-phal. 3 spikes (started a fourth, but it croaked) I've had this several years, no blooms. It did get a small spike last year, but blasted all the buds, so I'm not counting my blooms before they're hatched on this one Has a spike on this year's new cane, and each cane from the previous two years.

2. Den Mini Zengyo, 3 spikes. And, my first ever orchid seed pod (unplanned pregnancy)

3. Noid Onc alliance - Miltassia I think

4 & 5. Onc. Sharry Baby - couldn't even get the entire spikes in a pic - there are braches quite low on the spikes. 2 spikes, over 200 buds!

6 & 7. noid Cym (have a few Cyms with multiple small spikes, but this is the only one showing buds yet) I found a new small spike starting on this one as I was taking pix

8. Onc. Nanboh Waltz 'Boso Sweet' - this was one of a small batch of large seedling plugs I got a couple years ago - first ever spike for it

The spikes are from a phal I bought in bloom around july. The last pic is from a cym. This growth appeared about 2 months ago, and hasnt changed at all since I first noticed it. Most likely it's just new leaves, but I can hope for flowers, lol.

It's looked pretty much just like this since late september, which is when I first noticed it. Since then the plant has lost a couple leaves from it's oldest pb, and also grown a whole bunch of new roots.

Considering I was afraid I'd killed the plant after it lost most of its roots from a repotting in august, I'm happy with just about any growth.

Default Some of mine...

1. Den. Chao Praya Gem. Small third spike since the summer.
2. Onc. Sweet Sugar. Two spikes since last flowering in June.
3. Paph. flower bud and a new growth since last flowering in May.
4. Onc. Twinkle Yellow. Flower spike on each side of the pb. Last flowering in April.

5. Phal. Sogo white with red lip. The smallest leaf in the center is the 4th one this year since May. Now sending up two flower spikes hiding under those leaves.

6. Large White and red lip Phal spiking up again. This one was in bloom (over 20 flowers on two branching) from december to may. I love this one! It grew two very large leaves and lots of roots under LED light.

7. more phal spiking. White phal. it's two months behind schedule this year.

8. A beginning of a new cane on my NOID den cannaculatum hybrid.

9. Sharry Baby Tricolor. Two new growths on each of two pb. My apartment will smell super nice in a few months!!! yay!!!

10. Yet more phal spiking. This one also grew 4 leaves since May. white&pink candy stripe one. very cute!
