Dracula vampira and vase culture? Male
Default Dracula vampira and vase culture?

Before I spend the money, do you guys think that a Dracula vampira would work well in a modified vase culture? I'm thinking of getting a tall vase, sealing the top with a net pot and potting it lightly in sphag so there's room for the roots to breathe, then adding a small body of water at the bottom to increase the humidity. With the vase being tall and using a net pot to seal the top, I'm thinking that the buds would develop from the sides and bottom and drop down but not actually touch the water.

Your idea sounds interesting but are you going to get enough air circulation to the roots and buds?

Well, I was concerned about that with the Masdie's, but they are doing great in this culture. I wasn't really sure it would work with Dracula's or not, but thinking it would. Just thought I'd check with others. In fact, I even emailed Marni Trukel about it (she's supposedly really good with these guys) to see what her input would be.

Well, she was very quick to respond and that impressed me! While she has seen similar methods done for other orchids, she has never seen this one done with Dracula's so she's not sure how well it would work. She did note though that for the vampira the vase would have to be quite large as the bloom spike can be over a foot long, and the flower itself can be around 10 inches or more. In other words, to have it not touch a body of water, the vase would probably have to be 3 feet tall.

So, unless I can find one and have a glass piece specifically cut to hold the pot in the middle of the vase, it's back to the drawing board again, lol...

I don't know if it helps, but I bought this tall vase at Walmart in their crafts department:
