a couple of questions - Orchid Board

I am hoping someone can help me out. The question is regarding a cym. I have posted about this cym about a month ago wondering if it's new growth is a spike or a new pbulb, (as it has grown quite a bit since then). I will be happy either way, as this is my first yr growing cyms it has been a learning curve. I think that it is a spike, but this cym had no cool down and had lost alot of it's roots, so I kept it in the house. My other cym that has 8 pbulbs and has been outside every night since spring and has done nothing. I decided to bring it in tonight. It has had 1 and a half months of 5 degree celcuis temps, maybe next yr

. Anyway hopefully the whatever it is has grown enough so someone can tell me (the suspense is killing me). Thanks a bunch!

The end is hollow and has a sap stuff on it since it started growing

Yup - that's definitely a spike!

Not all cyms will spike at the same time - I have one that seems to spike a bit later than my others, so there may be hope for your other one yet!

I would agree that it is a spike and as WhiteRabbit says it is still early for some cyms so don't give up on the second plant as it could still flower in the new year.

Thanks all, so should I keep it outside still for it's cool down then? Because I brought it inside 3 days ago.

All I can say is that mine are still outside here in the UK but my nights are still a relativly warm 8-10 degrees C. Anything much cooler than that and mine will be moved to a cold greenhouse to protect from frost.

Yeap, spike.... mine are also out on the driveway and waiting for the cold temps.... As the spike elongates, you might want to VERY GENTLY nudge it upwards. But be oh so very careful or it will snap and well..... otherwise it appears as if it will be growing downward.....

Although this appears to be a spike, it will be on a severely stressed plant. I see no new growth as should occur each year.

An orchid will bloom itself to death so after it is through blooming (and I would not let the spike stay on the plant more than a couple of weeks for the sake of the health of the plant) take steps to properly repot it and get it in serious growth mode!

Do not attempt to stake it upright! You have not said what the name of the plant is and perhaps you have no tag, but for now, it wants to be pendulous and I urge you to let it do so!

Agree with you about your last comment and I apologize for possibly offering misleading information.
