Default Orchid Shows

Next week Ill be headed to check out an orchid show, my first, in Cocoa,Fl. What should one expect to see at an orchid show? It is a good time/place to purchase, and are there things to watch out for?

There seems to be quite a few shows in the coming months in FL. Anyone from this board going to any of these shows?

Dave

Be prepared to have your jaw drop when you walk through the doors!

Bring a camera and I've learned it's always good to have a pen and paper with you. You'll see plants you've never seen before and will want to write down the name.

There will be a number of displays set up by local societies and some from vendors, along with the vendors sales booths.

Which society is presenting the show? I'd like to see who the vendors are

The next show I'm planning on attending will be the WOC in January but our club will have a display at the Ridge Society show in Lakeland Sept 15 and 16.

*** I just checked the show calendar and I am assuming that the show you're attening is this one:
Platinum Coast Orchid Society 44th Annual Orchid Show.

Sounds like a great show!

There are a lot of good vendors attending but I only have experience with three of them...
Byrd's Orchids: Bill and Wanda Byrd have very nice, healthy orchids. They're very nice people too
B&D Orchids: Betty has some of the lovliest Cymbidiums you'll ever see!
EFG Orchids: I bought two of my Phaiocalanthe orchids from them and they're very nice.

Take a look around at all of the vendors...the society wouldn't have invited them to their show if their orchids weren't worthwhile.

Hick's Supplies is a great place to stock up on your other orchid needs.

Most important thing to watch for...spending way too much money. I liked going to my local show so much, i got involved with the local society. I am now "forced" to spend the entire weekend at the show.

Be sure to stop and think every now and then, too.

There is a great tendency to be awed by the plants and not consider if they'll be good for your conditions. I've been at this for over 35 years and I still get caught every now and then.
