you dont want air coming in that is much cooler at all, than the temp around the orchids.

Depends on your orchids. Some can take really cold temps and others shouldn't get below 70F. What do you have?

some may be able to take lower, but i would just be safe and say thoes are typical intermediate temps. like 55 min to be safe. some might be able to take a tad less

I have a cheapo table I am hoping to fit them on. But I like the idea of a rack as my collection grows.

is there any difference between the metal rack and the plastic ones they have? just preference? or is there a reason for the metal over plastic

i thought the metal looked alot nicer. its more expensive though. the plastic may be easier to have plants on, because the metal one has round bars that make up the surface of the shelf, whereas the plastic on i think that bars that go across that are plastic and are flat on one side, makes it a tiny bit easier to have smaller pots.

the largest plastic shelf was smaller than the largest metal shelf, so i got the metal one

the main reason i got metal though, was because i needed to hang lights from each shelf, and the plastic one would have been terrible for that

When it came time to bring my plants in this fall, I panicked...and went in search of a shelving unit knowing that I was going to be out of room on my existing shelves. I bought a really nice Black iron shelving unit with 5 glass shelves for $55 ON KIJIJII...not sure it you have this in the US...but Kijijii or ebay or for that matter garage sales can be a good source for shelving units. I have everything from industrial metal shelving to many glass shelving units of various sizes, each on serves a purpose. Good luck with your set up.

Help...I like how you say Junglewriter may not need all those shelves, if he's anything like me, they'll be filled in no time.

You do need good airflow...I underestimated at one time and it led to bugs ....and rot ...etc..etc...buy a fan or 2.
