Fdk. After Dark Brown Leaf Tips
Default

My FDK's got the brown tips when I first received it from under-watering. Once I got over my fear of wet sphag (I hate sphag), it shot up. Once it goes dormant, I am going to re-pot into S/H. I'm a chronic over-waterer and like to water everything everyday.

exactly, that's the way to go! Do not be afraid of cutting off all teh roots when the plant in dormant (actually this is recommended when repotting Catasetinae - even though not alway, but those are more exceptions to the rule and need some experience!). As for starting watering, more important than the growth itself, are the roots. Wait until they are at least 2 or 3 inches long (sometimes the roots grow a lot quicker than the new growth!)

I grow all my catasetums and similar genera in 100% sphag. I haven't had any problems at all and they grow quite well. I'm in North Fl so I have a great climate for these plants. I water every other day or everyday if it's really hot. No signs of trouble or root rot. Most of my PB's are over a foot too. When the leaves drop I'll put them I. The corner where they'll get hand watered once a week or so. In the spring I'll repot them in sphag and lots of time release fert and then hold water until the new growth is about four inches tall. Have fun and good luck! Post pics too!

no, the pots are sitting in water! like S/H!
Ramon, I have discovered the "sit in water" method works for my Ctsms also ! I grow indoors mainly and when I check them the next day after watering it's almost all gone ! I have about an inch of leca in the bottom and the rest is sphag. What is the ratio you are using of bark, perlite, sphag ?
