Question emma white

My emma white is awesome. This summer it gave me a nice spread of blooms and looks like she's trying to give me more!

While I was giving it a drink today, I noticed something growing out of one of the stems. The new growth is not coming out of the new stem that will make the blooms. (is that clear?!?) Is this a new stem coming out of the side? It's in the second pic.

It's pretty safe to say it's either a spike or a keiki. Older canes, even if they're leafless, can still spike and bloom. Enjoy!

Would the keiki look similar to what I'd see on a phal?

I've never seen a keiki on a dendrobium.

Either way, this is great!!

Dendrobium keikis, when they first start growing, look just like a spike. Sometimes they're a little fatter and sometimes not. The dead give-a-way for keikis is eventual root growth. Keikis can pop out in the central area where the leaves attach or at a leaf/node junction farther down the cane. Older shriveled canes can also produce keikis or spikes. Save a dendrobium cane if you ever accidentally break one. It will generally grow a keiki if you toss it to the side in a semi-shady area and forget about it for a few months.

Default new spike??

Thanks!
I just looked at it again and it seems it's coming out with a point. I've oriented it so that it face the sun, as does the other spike that's coming. I'll be keeping my eye on this. So excited!!

keikis also happen with alot of moisture and high temperatures. whats strange though is that with the flush of keikis i got last month, one of them turned into a spike. i didnt take a pic of it but i planted it. so to make things clear, it was a flower spike with roots at the bottom...... idk if it will grow or what but whatever it was its strange

Cool! My Den bigibbum surprised me by spiking from the side recently - I'd been watching the top of the new cane for a spike, and didn't notice the spike coming from the side til it was a couple inches long. And a noid den-phal has growth on the side that I'm not yet sure what it is ...
