Sounds like great information here for you. I had a phal, not a rescue but one that took everything I had to keep from sending it to orchid heaven. The rooting system was nil, the leaves were limp but a new leaf appeared. That was 4 months ago and now the leaves are showing life (less-limp if that's a word) and a new baby leaf. Phal's are extremely forgiving and will share with you there happiness during blooming season.

I have another phal that has been in bloom since Feb over an over now has one single limp leaf left, flowering a single bloom and a new showing of a new stem or possibly a keiki. This I say is forgiving...because it appears to be very tired.

Great job on your rescue...

I guess were all in the plant-rescue business... I rescued a Dendrobium "Karen" a few weeks ago and it's thanking me with flowers this week... The Walmart's orchids were completely forgotten; overwatered by rain in pools, the plants had just gone native when they were abandoned.

When I saw in what bad shape they were in- and still alive- I believed what they say about orchid tenacity.

Lowe's has past-flowered ones half price, but Home Depot has their orchids on consignment, and unsold ones go back to the vendor- theoretically. I saw some in pretty bad shape.

i guess we are all looking for bargains like that, and i,m sure we all have a story or 2.
living on a fixed income those are the only orchids i hunt for, except on my birthday when i get to buy a healthy orchid,
i normally buy from everspring orchods which have a big greenhouse here in winnipeg.
i once spotted a whole shoppingcart of dendrobium phalenopsis at rona they were just stems no leaves and hardly no mix they were 5 dollars i offered 50 cts and walked home with and armload full.
that was 3 years ago and they bloom for me every yr
they are in bud now

And I thought I was the wierd one! Several of my orchids are rescues. My idea of a good weekend is going from store to store to see what needs rescuing.

I managed to get 3 half grown phals for free at the Hortifair in Amsterdam last month. it was the end of the fair, and one of the Japanese orchid companies was selling off all the plants they brought. Originally there were priced at 3€ each, but I managed to pursuade them (salemen who have to clue about orchids even though they work in the company) that they were in bad shape (only a little bit of root rot and some banged up leaves), and got them free!!! Now I just have to wait a few years for the blooms. Right now they are growing roots like crazy.
