Viz. the point that ants are not beneficial: they cultivate aphids, which are notorious plant pests, especially hard to control on outdoor plants. Aphids excrete a sugary sap (hence they attract and are protected by ants). The sap in turn is food for and unsightly black fungus which will soon coat your plant.
