Which Orchid(s) for Direct Sun in FL? Male
Default Which Orchid(s) for Direct Sun in FL?

Hi all,

I'm BRAND NEW to orchids! WE live in SW FL, just south of Sarasota. I have 2 Phalaenopsis that we keep under the lanai overhang so they are, for the most part, out of DIRECT sun, but get plenty of indirect sun. This area of our screened-in lanai faces the Southeast. If, looking straight out from our lanai is 12:00, the sun comes up at about 10:00 and sets at about 4:00. The area I'm wondering about gets morning sun, filtered by the screencage and, after 2pm or so, goes into the shade. It's where we have our "picnic table". I'd LOVE to find an orchid(s) to use as a centerpiece, say, in a 12"-14" wide x 6" tall pot. Any ideas/suggestions? Cattleya? Cymbidium?? Maybe even mixing 2-4 kinds in the same pot for color/variety????

Mokaras, Renantheras, Arachnis, Vandopsis lissochiloides, Schomburgkias and terete leafed vandas such as Vanda Miss Joaquim.

Anything else will burn. These are all tall orchids though.

Grammatophyllums, which get very big, like a lot of sunlight. Well many threads/articles say strong indirect light I have seen them grown out doors with no or very little shade. I'm getting one soon from Hawaii.
