What to do with a big floppy phal? Female
Default What to do with a big floppy phal?

I prefer my phals to be nice, neat, tidy, and organized. And for the most part, they are, except for the one rebel. He is a NOID and a very big boy. The leaf span from tip to tip is 16+ inches. Every time I repot, I try to convice him that he really wants to grow up and not flop. However, he just continues to be a flopper and I'm affraid that it's just going to fall right out of the pot one day, roots and all. Currently it is a good spag mix in a plastic pot. I have to put this pot inside a ceramic orchid pot, just so it stays upright. When it spikes, it puts out a good number of large flowers. Is there another way to grow such a big chid?

Phals like being sideways best and are least likely to get crown rot that way. I just let them go with the flow and lay down if they want to.

You could always mount it. And it doesn't sound to terribly large. I have one that has a single leaf that is 14 inches long.

I put stones in the bottom of most of my plastic potted orchids, including side-flop Phals or anything else that may be top heavy. And some of those I also put the plastic pot down in a clay pot for added support. And some STILL want to tip over, so I put empty clay pots or other orchids around them to add more support. All of this seems to work for now. LOL
